Interesting post Shan! I always have a need to know where I am when wandering a new city but we were in Barcelona over Christmas and I let this idea go, particularly when we were in the Gothic Quarter, which is just a series of tiny, winding streets. I agree – it was much more enjoyable to wander and stumble upon new sights. Totally agree with you about the washrooms too – I’ve often had to go buy a coffee that I didn’t want just in order to use the toilets at a Starbucks. It’s annoying. I have always been grossed out by those “metal box toilets”.

The quality is fine. I think it’s great that the buildings are slanted – like you said so that you realized how fast the train is going.

Thanks for your comment, Cyrille. I wish i had used a better video recorder to capture our journey past Mt. Fuji, but I only had my cell phone handy when it popped into view. Even though it’s strange to see the slanted buildings, the video reminds me of how fast we were travelling.

Regarding addresses in Japan. They are area based rather than street based. So an address is a series of concentric names. A Canadian example would be Canada, BC, Metro Vancouver, Vancouver, Mount Pleasant, … etc… It’s quite difficult to stumble on your target, you must have a map, which most train stations do.

Nice! Notice how in your Shinkansen video buildings close to the tracks appear slanted. This is because the camera scans the scene from top to bottom. When it reaches the bottom the scene has shifted to the left giving the buildings a slanted appearance.
